What is a typical therapy session like?
Each therapy session is unique and will be shaped by what you are hoping to get out of the experience. My goal is for therapy sessions to be a time when you feel heard and understood, as well as a time that we actively work together on areas of your life that you are not satisfied with. This may be done through learning new skills, practicing new ways of thinking, exposure to things that are scary, or other activities rooted in the modalities listed below.
What therapy modalities are you trained in?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Habit Reversal Training (HRT)
How long is each session?
Each session is 55 minutes.
Where are sessions held?
Depending on availability, sessions can be held either in-person or via telehealth.
All telehealth sessions are run through a HIPAA-compliant video system on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Because of the flexibility of telehealth, I am able to meet with any client currently living in North Carolina.
All in-person sessions are conducted at my office at 911 Broad St (Durham, NC) on Fridays.
What if I am afraid to talk about my OCD theme?
Most people coming to therapy feel nervous. Many clients with OCD feel particularly nervous talking about the content of their intrusive thoughts. I have experience working with clients with intrusive thoughts about a variety of topics including perfectionism, contamination, sexuality, sexual harm, physical harm, and pedophilia. You are welcome to disclose your intrusive thoughts at your own pace, but know that I am comfortable talking about OCD, regardless of the theme, whenever you are ready.
What should I do before the first session?
Once we put an initial appointment on the calendar, you will be sent the intake paperwork to complete before we meet. This will include questions about your current life, what brings you to therapy, and your financial information.
Do you offer couples or family therapy?
Not yet!
Do you provide free phone consultations?
Yes! If you have questions about my practice or what therapy might look like for you, I am happy to schedule a free 15 minute phone consultation. This will give you an opportunity to hear more from me and share a little bit about what you are looking for in therapy.
What if it feels like we are not a good fit?
Most individuals can sense after a few sessions (or reading over a website) if it may not be a good therapeutic fit between the client and the therapist. If that is the case, I encourage you to seek out a new therapist through Psychology Today. If you are still unable to find a therapist with availability, feel free to reach out, and I may be able to help connect you with one!
